It’s finally the holiday season! Whether you’re headed out for a weekend break or a two-week trip, here are some travel packing hacks that work for any adventure.

You made it! It’s time to close those tabs, wrap up the year and go in search of rest and relaxation. But there’s nothing worse than arriving at a destination ill prepared. Forgetting essential items at home or lugging along more than you need is a pain. With this packing guide, we’ll have you prepped and ready for any eventuality.

Pack smarter not harder

The bigger your suitcase, the more unnecessary stuff you’ll pack. Set out everything you think you’ll need for the trip, then edit ruthlessly. Underwear and socks – pack one pair of each for every day of your trip. One pair of pajamas, a few T-shirts, shorts and a pair of jeans or chinos are the bare essentials.

Braving the outdoors in Winter yields high rewards when done right. We’ve got the tips to help you explore our beautiful country during the colder months.

Written by Jennifer Worthington-Smith

There’s nothing quite like closing all your tabs, shaking off your week, and getting the heck out of town. But in Winter, the desire to curl up and hibernate tends to overwhelm the thirst for adventure. Our corner of the world, however, is not one with a uniform climate of cold misery cross-country. We have coastlines that are seldom without sun, mountains peaked with icing-sugar snow, and the classic soothing rainfall essential for Winter-lovers. Let’s get exploring.

Snow-capped Splendour

There’s no need to travel across seas and continents just to get a taste of a magical Winter wonderland. Our snowy mountain peaks demand to be skied on, snow-angelled, and populated with oddly-shaped snowmen. Layering up lends itself to some dashing outfit options, and we’re yet to meet someone who doesn’t look cute in a beanie. Pack your cosiest socks, scarves, and boots – you’re about to be the gorgeous love interest in a Hallmark film.

It can be tricky to predict where and when we’ll get snow-capped peaks in SA, but the Drakensberg is a reliable option with breathtaking views that make it a bucket list destination. Book into Premier Resort Sani Pass and make it your ultra-comfortable base for exploring the iconic Sani Pass region, the Ezemvelo Nature Reserve, and favourite local attractions with serious old-school charm.

Basking in Winter Sunlight

A little-known, potentially controversial fact: South African beaches are better in Winter. Look past your incredulity and read on, my friend, because when the colder months roll around, the wind drops, and the crisp sunlight feels like the kiss of angels – a warmth unparalleled. The fish and chip experience after a morning surf hits the spot so forcefully you’ll feel like Poseidon himself. Grab your sunnies and a snug hoodie for after the wetsuit, and you’re set. Seaside not an option? Enjoy the crisp winter chill with a side of sunlight in a country locale that lets you.

Summer is coming, and we’ve drawn up a handy how-to for warmer-weather style. Just add blue sky.

Dress for the occasion – and the destination.

Written by Afrika Bogatsu

So, it’s finally time for a break, whether with the family, treating your favourite person, or taking some well-deserved time out for yourself. You’re there for a good time and not a long time so it’s important to look your best and make the right style impression. If 2021 taught us anything, it’s that life is short and we should take any and every opportunity to turn every moment into an occasion.

We’ve drawn up a staycation style guide for wherever you might find yourself this summer.

The must-pack essentials

Before we get to the destination, let’s start with the basics:

Double up on socks and underwear – wherever you’re headed, the more the merrier because we’re talking multiple looks a day.

Pyjamas because you can still be stylish while you sleep.

Sunglasses (and sunscreen) and a cap or bucket hat.

A toiletry bag. This goes without saying but we’ll say it again, you always gotta stay fresh and clean, and moisturised wherever you may be. Bra God, don’t like ashy. Throw in your choice of the 6 ultimate scents of summer.

Masks and sanitiser. Vaxxed or not, we’re staying safe all summer long.

Packing tips

Choose clothes that can be mixed and matched, so all the combos communicate. Coordination is key, as it’ll make getting dressed so much easier.

Avoid overpacking. We know this can be difficult if you like options but you also don’t wanna look like a sgidla va, or like you’re moving in.

Roll, don’t fold your clothes. It not only saves you space but also prevents clothes from creasing, because who has time to iron when you’re on holiday?

Beach

Let’s take it back to the beach

You don’t have to be Chad le Clos to look the part when you’re invited to a pool party or the beach. Have fun with your choice of swimwear, grab a fun bright print or eye-catching colour that’ll ensure your friends won’t miss you on Clifton 1 through 4.

When you wanna dress up for sundowners or dinner somewhere nice with your summer fling, go for a light (linen or cotton) co-ord.

Most importantly if you’re going to be wearing flip flops or slides, please get a pedicure. We thank you in advance.

While others flock to the coast, you’ve chosen to stay in the city (or head there). Good choice! We share our recommendations for the ultimate minibreak in a city seldom known as a holiday town.

Written by Neo Khanyile

Jozi. The City of Gold. Gangster’s Paradise. Whatever you know it as, Johannesburg is the most dynamic city in the country. Holidayers usually flock to the coast at this time of year, and this is precisely the reason you would want to be in the city for this season. The streets aren’t as packed as usual and this gives more time for exploring and immersing yourself in what the city has on offer.

Day 1, 8AM Breakfast at Glenda’s

Start off your day at the popular Glenda’s in Hyde Park for breakfast. Glenda’s is a lovely eating-out experience with sunlight piercing through the large surrounding trees. The waitrons are attentive, friendly and efficient, and meals are beautifully presented. The French café-style restaurant has a unique design and warm ambiance.

Day 1, 9:30AM Rosebank Art Crawl

Local reverence for Dezemba! (and the surrounding months) is well documented. December is in our DNA: it’s more than an occasion, and something akin to a national sport. But, as collective pastimes go, the festive season can be spoiled by the burden of choice. With so many options, you risk missing out on the real gems. Fear not, as we’re here to provide all the guidance you need – just mask up, make sure you’ve got your second dose, and grab your mates to explore the best of the season.
