Trends come and go, but classics will always have their place. We’ve rounded up a selection of trends to try this year – and those that you can wave goodbye to…

Retro pattern, colour and print

The bold and bright colours of the ‘70s and ‘80s are making a comeback in 2023. Keep an eye out for retro-inspired patterns and full-on colour-blocking, like the ones our folks used to wear. Blue and orange seem to be particularly dominant.

Delicate footwear

The men’s footwear silhouettes dominating fashion this year are tapered and less masculine — such as slim-line leather loafers, elegant sandals and soft slip-ons.

Tank tops

They might make you feel like you’ve just stepped out of the latest Fast & Furious film, but a plain white tank looks excellent with pretty much everything. How to style it in 2023? We have it on good authority that you should wear it tucked into your pants and accessorised with a shiny gold chain and a flashy belt.

Skinny jeans

Thanks to jeggings, skinny jeans have seen their heyday. For 2023, the trendiest bottoms will have wide legs — for jeans and other trousers. This style is more flattering, elongating the leg and making even a plain T-shirt and sneaker combo a standout fashion moment.

Wrap-around sunglasses

If you’re not a cyclist, a police officer, or a member of the Proteas cricket team, wrap-around sunglasses are no longer for you. We can’t tell you how to live your life, but we can suggest a more timeless design that suits most face shapes, like classic wayfarers or aviator-style shades.

Overly-tight tailoring

There is ample evidence that in 2022, many men believed that wearing super fitted clothing was the way to go. However, in 2023, we are shooting for tailored, not tight. If you can afford it, opt for a custom-made suit; if not, buy an off-the-rack suit and have it tailored to perfectly fit your frame (and budget).

New year, new fashion choices… make sure that you stand out for all the right reasons!
