Every year the international community joins South Africa in celebrating its favourite son, Nelson Mandela. Mandela Day shines a light on the legacy of one of the most important people in our nation’s history – a man who changed the 20th century and helped shape the 21st.

On the 18th of July – Mandela’s birthday – we collectively take a moment to honour the values that inspired Nelson Mandela: determination, a deep commitment to justice and human rights and unwavering compassion. He was a profound believer in equality and dignity for every person, and his tireless effort to open dialogue continues to be the model for building solidarity where there was once division.

In 2009 the United Nations General Assembly declared Nelson Mandela’s birthday as Nelson Mandela International Day, and it is then that Madiba asked the people of the world to honour him annually by supporting and helping others on this day.

This year’s Mandela Day theme is ‘do what you can, with what you have, where you are’, which reaffirms the power of the collective to affect great change. When we all believe that no act is too small, we embrace the true spirit of Mandela Day.

To commemorate Mandela Day this year, Markham and premium South African streetwear brand Magents have joined forces on a capsule collection of tees that will make a stylish addition to your wardrobe. A portion of the sales of each T-shirt will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom initiative to enable them to continue their important work.

There are two tees to choose from, both featuring an image of the iconic statesman and retailing for R199 each, exclusively at Markham.

Since 2009 Mandela Day has encouraged millions of people worldwide to actively uplift their communities through acts of goodness. While purchasing a tee is not the only way you can help serve your community this Mandela Day, it is a notable first step.

So this year, #MakeItYours and celebrate an icon.
