Think practical

Many of us tend to buy gifts with a high ‘wow’ factor because we value the praise that comes with being a generous gift-giver – we forget to consider the practicality of the gift and if it’s actually a desired item for the recipient. This year, instead of trying to outdo yourself with something over-the-top, rather pick long-lasting, practical items that your giftee actually needs or wants.

How about a gift that keeps on giving?

Nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a gift that keeps on giving, right? Why not opt for subscriptions or membership passes as the ultimate present? Think: a 12-month Spotify premium gift voucher, an annual subscription to their favourite magazine, a membership pass to the Two Oceans Aquarium or a co-working space that they frequent. You get the idea…

Get hands-on

Make it personal by gifting something that you have created yourself with your friend/mom/girlfriend in mind. Inexpensive ideas include buying a planter and seeds and sowing a herb garden for their kitchen windowsill; making or painting a ceramic vessel (think: Clay Café); painting something a little personal on a canvas; or selecting a bunch of their best snaps from Instagram and getting them Polaroid-style photographs printed via a service like Nifty250.

Ask, and then listen

If you’re really lost – ask! Those close to you will know that you’re on the hunt for the perfect gift for them, and nothing is more thoughtful than asking them what they really want (within reason). Whether it’s a day at the spa or a new set of knives, when they make suggestions, listen and then take action. They’re unlikely to be disappointed if it’s something they requested!

It’s the thought that counts, for sure – but a little (more) effort goes a long way. Take these ideas into consideration and you’ll be the man!
