Creating awareness in your community

You know the benefits of good physical health, but what about good mental health and well-being?

There hasn’t been a better time to talk about mental health and well-being than right now. With depression and suicide rates growing, we all need to make sure we take better care of ourselves and more importantly those around us.

Here are some simple suggestions about ways that you can raise awareness of mental health and well-being

  • Talk with everyone you know. Ask family, friends, colleagues and community members how they’re doing and really listen to the answers. It may give you a clue that they need help.
  • Educate yourself about mental health and well-being illnesses. It’s not uncommon for people to misunderstand mental illness. Learn more about it and share what you learn.
  • Use social media like Facebook and Twitter which can be great forums for inspiring people to be open-minded and to learn more when it comes to mental health and well-being.
  • Volunteer. Mental health awareness organisations often need help with specific initiatives and on-going efforts.
  • Encourage physical health that supports mental health. Physical health can have a direct impact on mental health. Eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise and sleep all play a part in a person’s mental and emotional state.
  • Open up about your experience. If you’ve struggled or are struggling with mental health and well-being, share your story. It may be the helping hand someone needs.
